Mission Statement

The Mission of the Center for East-European and Asian Studies (CEEAS) is to develop independent research on issues that shape and influence the regional political and security environments in Eurasia, to offer relevant and timely analyses on these issues and to represent an independent regionally-recognized forum for the development of academic, yet politically relevant, debate on events and issues concerning the East-European and Asian spaces.

CEEAS was founded in October 2007, within the National School of Political Studies and Public Administration in Bucharest, Romania, based on decision no. 128/09.10.2007 of the NSPSPA’s Senate. The CEEAS aims to promote Eurasian studies in the national and regional academic environment. The CEEAS is the first and so far the only Romanian research institution focused on this particular aim.

The CEEAS’s mission is:
  • to develop independent research on issues that influence and shape the regional political and security environments in Eurasia;
  • to offer relevant and timely analysis on these regional issues;
  • to develop as an independent, regionally recognized forum to foster academic, yet politically relevant debates on events and issues of interest in Eurasia.
In order to achieve these ends, the CEEAS relies on a young, highly-trained team of experts (Ph.D., Ph.D. students and MA graduates in International Relations, Conflict Analysis and Conflict Prevention, European Studies, Political Science, History, Law) that specialize on issues concerning political and security dynamics in Eurasia.

The CEEAS’s activities unfold based on financial resources such as research projects and grants, donations and the like. The CEEAS is a non-governmental, non-profit organization as defined by Romanian law.

The CEEAS’s objectives are:
  • to develop research projects on present and potential regional issues in the fields of security studies, energy security, asymmetrical threats and new regional and international security challenges, good governance, post-conflict reconstruction, crisis prevention and consequence management, that elicit growing interest in the corporate, national, regional and/or international environments;
  • to establish the CEEAS as an academic bridge between the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian spaces. From this perspective, the CEEAS team strives to foster a regional climate that is conducive to the development of research partnerships between education and research institutions and centers originating in the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian spaces, the development of transnational, regional and inter-regional research projects on issues of common interest, the development and consolidation of a network of regional, yet internationally-recognized experts in the fields of foreign policy and security studies from the Eurasian space, organizing and hosting international conferences and seminars on issues concerning Eurasia that benefit from the participation of high-profile Western and/or Eurasian experts;
  • to establish the CEEAS as a research excellence center dedicated both to the academic and political communities in the fields of foreign policy and security studies at the national and regional levels, and the students of International Relations, Regional and Area Studies that specialize on Eurasia and issues concerning Eurasia;
  • to help develop the curricula for Eurasian studies in Romania and at the regional level;
  • to edit and publish a series of regionally-recognized publications both academically and politically relevant;
